53 and Softball
So, I started the year off stating, “I will be embarking on new adventures this year, going off script, trying new or different things, going new places, and meeting new interesting people.” Well, that journey began and I currently have 3 different adventures working. The first one that I want to share today is “53 and Softball”. That’s right…I joined my company’s co-ed softball team!
Sometimes I tickle myself… it’s been close to 40 years since I played softball. LOL, KMSL, ROTFLl!!! It still makes me laugh that I would dare to play softball at age 53. And yes, I am probably the oldest one on the team. That’s okay, I got HEART, that counts right?
Oh and by the way, I hurt myself the very first day of practice. Seriously, I thought I could just hit the ball and run to first base like it was normal walking. It started out that way but, half way between home and first base, I found myself in the sand, on my knees and pain radiating from my left hamstring. That night, the next day, and days to come at work and home were very painful. There was no comfortable place to sit or lay. I literally had to grin and bear it! And, with only 5 days before our first game, which happened to be a double-header. I am thinking to myself, what have I gotten myself into…but, I got HEART, right? I am solider!
Game day, double-header, and I am starting in right field. LOL, KMSL, ROTFLl!!! I was in right field pondering hitting the ball and running the bases. We get three outs and the inning is over. I am the 7th person in the lineup to bat. The ball comes, I swing, I hit and the run begins. OUCH, PAIN, HELP ME!!!! I could hear my team and people in the stands saying RUN and HURRY! I was running as fast as I could in slow motion. First base seemed liked a football field away.
I made it to first base that time and 2 more times. Talk about GRACE…after the second time, one of my teammates was kind enough to be my runner. Thank you God! That was almost 4 weeks ago. I am still on the team. Our record is 2 wins and 1 tie. No, I didn’t quit. Yes, I am still experiencing a little pain. But, I am determined to win at 53 and Softball!
Oh yeah, I have three new very good friends I like you to meet. To paraphrase the famous line by Al Pacino in the movie Scarface, “Say hello to my 3 GOOD friends”!!! Before and after every practice and every game, I lubricate and medicate with Advil, Aspercreme and Tiger Balm. But, I am determined to win at 53 and Softball!
7 games remaining… Stay Tune! #2017Experiences, #GFEpart2
