“Never had a cross word with any of them,” says Ms. Bernice Underwood to the Washington Post recently. She is one of four women who grew up together, playing jacks, jumping rope and learning the two-step in Southwest D.C. These friends met at the end of World War I and have been friends ever since.
They’ve spent nearly 100 years in the community and in their church Zion Baptist Church in Northwest D.C., where the women have been members for several decades. This summer all four of them, are about to turn 100 years old.
