This past weekend, my friends and I headed downtown to Gladys Knight Chicken and Waffles on Peachtree Street for a taste of her world’s famous chicken and waffles. At 5:30 pm, our experience quickly took a turn when we discovered the wait time to be 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. We made the decision to drive further down Peachtree which led us to Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint. We didn’t have reservations, but they were kind enough to seat us immediately with advanced warning that we would have to be out by 8pm. Our party of seven agreed and we began our dining experience.
Our food orders consisted of White Oak Pastures’ Short Rib, Peach Glazed Alaskan Grill Salmon, Chicken and Waffles, Fried Green Tomatoes and Shrimp and Grits. 6 out of the 7 dinners were rated exceptional! The chicken wings were seasoned well, crispy and delicious and the waffles were described as light/crispy on the outside, slightly moist/ fluffy on the inside, and topped with a warm maple syrup….YUMMY! (Note: I will follow back up when I discuss Gladys Chicken and Waffles -as to which one has the best chicken and waffles!)
One demerit: A person in our party was not satisfied with the Shrimp and Grits. While the food looked presentable, she stated that she’d eaten better versions of the dish.
One person in our party was celebrating her birthday. Our waiter indicated that the restaurant gives one “free” dessert for birthdays. She selected the Sweet Georgia’s Peach Cobbler to go. The birthday girl said, “It was outstanding!!! It was perfectly prepared with a buttery crust and topped with sprinkled sugar. The cobbler had the sweetest peaches ever intertwined throughout this delicacy.” She claims that it was the best she’d eaten in her 50 year lifespan!
The atmosphere was relaxed- yet there were elements of grown and sexy. The crowd seemed to fall in the age ranges of 20 to 65. There was live entertainment the entire time we were there. A two-man-band played most of the evening. However, you could sense a shifting of anticipation in the atmosphere when the second band took the stage, at 8pm.
The food prices were reasonable.
Overall, our dining experience was great and we will definitely dine there again!
